DIASPORA INFLUENCE AT ANIMAE CARIBE 2024

DIASPORA INFLUENCE AT ANIMAE CARIBE 2024

At the #massive Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2023) in Egypt, organized by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) under the CreativeAfricaNexus, I had the distinct honor of being part of a pivotal discussion titled “The Future of Animation, is Africa Prepared?” It was an immense privilege to be included among such a distinguished panel of industry leaders and visionaries, representing the Caribbean within this vibrant conversation about Africa’s animation future.

Our panel was composed of remarkable professionals: Ebele Okoye of Jolly Squid Media & Animation from Nigeria, John Kamara, the global CEO of Adanian Labs and Ada Animation in Kenya, Mahmoud Hemeda, CEO/Co-founder of Samaka Studio and the Animatex Animation Festival in Egypt, Amath Ndiaye, a pioneering Senegalese animator and CEO of Obelus Film & Animation Studio, Comfort Arthur, award-winning director and CEO of @The Comfy Studios in Ghana, and Stuart Forrest, CEO of Triggerfish. Together, we delved into the profound questions of African animation’s readiness for the future, tackling issues ranging from technology and collaboration to talent development and global market access.

From the outset, it was clear that this discussion was more than just another panel; it was a crucial convergence of minds dedicated to shaping a path forward for African animation. For me, representing Trinidad and Tobago, it was a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of our global community, particularly the shared histories and cultural ties that bind the African and Caribbean diasporas. As we reflected on the industry’s past and present, it became evident that the challenges we face are not unique to Africa but resonate deeply within the Caribbean as well. The lack of funding and the difficulties in securing investment are hurdles that we, too, have grappled with. However, the conversation also underscored the tremendous opportunities for growth, especially when we consider the global influence of African and Caribbean cultures.

For our 23rd edition of Animae Caribe Festival, we are celebrating the diaspora alongside the Caribbean, African, Indian Cuban and other global animation industries. With its unique cultural experiences, and opportunities to connect with industry giants like Disney and Pixar, we invite the world to come animate in sunshine!
