11 Aug World Premiere of “From Roots to Recognition” – World Steelpan Day 2024
Celebrating the Steelpan: A Global Recognition with Local Roots
In commemoration of the inaugural World Steelpan Day on August 11th, 2024, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and the Arts of Trinidad and Tobago partnered with Animae Caribe HOUSE to produce a unique animation, “FROM ROOTS TO RECOGNITION.” This project, which celebrates Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument—the steelpan—was conceptualized by a talented team of five young animators from Animae Caribe HOUSE. Under the expert guidance of Cuban animator director Alexander Rodriguez, these animators brought the rich history and cultural significance of the steelpan to life through digital storytelling.
The musical score accompanying the animation was crafted by an exceptional team led by Akua Leith, with contributions from Gregory Joseph, Stefon West, and Nigel Diaz. Together, they created a soundtrack that not only resonates with the rhythmic beauty of the steelpan but also reflects its journey from a grassroots invention to a globally recognized symbol of cultural pride. The impact of this project on those involved has been profound. For the young animators, it was an opportunity to hone their skills under expert mentorship while contributing to a piece of work that celebrates their heritage. The musicians found the experience to be a creative exploration of how traditional sounds can be reinterpreted and celebrated in new and dynamic ways.
FROM ROOTS TO RECOGNITION” is the first of many projects initiated by Animae Caribe HOUSE that will pave the way for small and micro studios to collaborate. This project marks the beginning of a new era where creative talents from diverse backgrounds can come together to produce world-class content that celebrates Caribbean culture.
Animae Caribe HOUSE, located at No. 2 Abercromby Street in St. Joseph, is more than just a workspace—it is a creative hub where digital artists, animators, and other creatives can meet, collaborate, and develop their craft. It offers a supportive community where ideas flourish, and partnerships are formed, ensuring that every creative individual has a place to call home. This space is dedicated to nurturing talent and fostering collaborations that will continue to elevate Caribbean content on the global stage. As Trinidad and Tobago celebrates the first International Day of the Steelpan, Animae Caribe HOUSE proudly stands as a beacon of creativity and collaboration, ensuring that the legacy of the steelpan and other cultural treasures continue to inspire future generations.
